SENSITIVE SKIN? Call the Doctor...Dr. Sponge Review

I was gifted with a Dr. Sponge (from the amazing Mara of Love Potion Perfumes) and I want to give you all an idea of how it works:

This amazing sponge is a little skin-care miracle!  I tried the Original Dr. Sponge, but there are varieties for many skin care concerns.  One of the things I like about the Original is that it can be used with any cleanser you wish.

When you receive your Dr. Sponge, it's hard and dry.  Don't despair!!  Once wet, it softens and becomes one of the most gentle skin care tools I've ever used.  It's almost like washing with a silk washcloth.  Dr. Sponge gently exfoliates with NO irritation.  Simply apply a bit of your regular cleanser or face wash and gently massage your skin for a minute or so.  Rinse your skin and carry on with your skin care routine.

To care for your Dr. Sponge, rinse thoroughly and hang up to dry with the little cord on the sponge.  My first sponge lasted for months!!

You can also use Dr. Sponge for an indulgent full-body treatment!

Abundance!!

What does ABUNDANCE mean to you?  For some of us, it means money, plain and simple.  For some, it has to do with having enough to share with others.

For me, abundance is freedom to stretch, learn, explore and create.  An abundance of energy to take on not only the tasks of the day, but my wildest dreams for the future!  And, of course, an abundance of resources to make all this happen!

I recently met a woman known as THE ABUNDANCE WHISPERER.  Her name is Cristi Earnshaw, and she has an incredible gift to guide others in manifesting abundance in their lives.

http://youtu.be/AjTZc872eaA

Here's a funny Conan segment, where a happy client talks about Cristi.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to treat myself to a session with Cristi.

We had our 90-minute session via Face time. She also works in person and via Skype. She can even do a session on "regular" phone, if that's what is available. She is a fun, passionate woman, and I felt an instant connection with her.
What I've experienced so far is an amazing sense of peace and control, along with an enthusiasm for life that I haven't felt in some time. I can't explain it, I wake up more refreshed, I jump out of bed, and I feel like I'm more efficient and have more time in each day! The only thing different is that I'm doing what Cristi calls "Prosperity Projects" almost every day - taking small steps toward clearing the energy in my space to allow more abundance.

I highly recommend Cristi!  Give yourself the gift of a session with her - the sky's the limit with what you can create!!

I'll be back to update this post as I continue on with my projects!!

Microdermabrasion Q&A

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a terrific anti-aging treatment that is appropriate for almost every skin type.  Some of the benefits are:

Reduces fine lines
Reduces hyperpigmentation/acne scars
Smoothes the skin’s texture
Brightens the complexion
Creates a firmer appearance
Helps correct/prevent congestion

How does microdermabrasion work?

Ultra-fine mineral crystals are applied to the skin under pressure, and simultaneously vacuumed off.  The crystals sweeping over the skin loosen the dead skin cells, which are then removed.  This also helps to clear congestion from the pores.  By doing this deep exfoliation, hyperpigmentation is gradually reduced.  Microdermabrasion also helps treatment products and moisturizers penetrate more effectively.

How often should I have microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion can be part of your monthly professional skin care regimen.  In some cases, we will recommend that you start with an intensive 6-session series, where the treatments are performed every 2 weeks, or as recommended by your esthetician.  This will produce excellent results when treating hyperpigmentation.

Can I combine microdermabrasion with other treatments?

Absolutely!!  We will analyze your skin and we may recommend that you combine microdermabrasion with one or more of the following:

Deep Cleansing Facial
Glycolic treatment
Oxygen treatment

What types of products should I use following microdermabrasion?

The most important thing to remember about microdermabrasion is that it is an extremely effective exfoliating treatment, so sunscreen is absolutely required after the treatment.  You may wish to schedule your treatments when you won’t be spending a lot of time outdoors, but if you must, we recommend a full-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or greater, along with a wide-brimmed hat.

When treating hyperpigmentation, it is necessary to add a tyrosinase inhibitor to your home care routine.  These products help to lighten and prevent hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure.  We carry the most effective products of this kind, and your esthetician will be happy to help you with your selection.

The first 2 days after your microdermabrasion treatment you will want to avoid harsh cleansers, scrubs, highly fragranced products and retinols (including Retin-A).  After 2 days you can resume your regular skin-care regimen.

What if I have active acne?  Can I have a microdermabrasion treatment?

Your esthetician will analyze your skin and recommend the best treatments for you.  Cystic acne contraindicates a microdermabrasion treatment, as it is too stimulating to the oil follicles, but light acne and monthly blemishes respond beautifully to this treatment.  If you are on prescription acne medication (oral or topical) please consult with your dermatologist to decide if microdermabrasion is right for you.

What if I’m pregnant?

Please let us know, and we will make sure that all the products and procedures of your treatment are appropriate, and congratulations!!

If you have any further questions about microdermabrasion, or any skin care procedure or product, please feel free to email me at appointments@goddesslynnebodyandskin.com

What happens during a facial?

Recently I answered some questions about Facials, and I thought I would share with you readers some basic information and tips for getting the best facial!

What happens during a facial?

Facials can vary widely, but the basics are cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, soothing/treating and hydration/protection.  I can do a facial in as little as 30 minutes, but I prefer to take 50-60.  I start with covering the eyes and examining the skin with a magnification lamp.  I'm looking for signs of acne, dehydration, oiliness, hyperpigmentation, congestion (clogged pores) and anything else.  This is also when I'm asking my client about what she/he is noticing about their skin, and what products they are using at home.  I've already had them fill out a form that includes listing their allergies.
It’s very helpful if you let me know what products have worked for you in the past, and which products caused irritation, were ineffective, or that you didn’t enjoy.  I will be recommending products for you to use at home, so this information will be important.

I cleanse the skin 2x, sometimes using the same product, sometimes 2 different products.  Sometimes I use hot towels from my towel cabi, sometimes sponges to remove cleanser.

Next I usually apply an exfoliant such as a resurfacing treatment or an enzyme product, and I put the steam on the face for 10 minutes.  This is where I do a neck/shoulder massage (yay!).  After removing this product I follow with...
Extractions!!  Fun for me!!  The steam has prepared your skin and softened any debris in the follicles.  Removing blackheads and congestion is the part of the facial that is really hard to do yourself.  This is what you're really paying for, and this procedure can cause some purging, which might account for the breakouts some people have after a facial.  As the excess sebum comes out of the follicle, it can also "stir up" inflammation, which can cause a blemish.  I use a product after extractions that contains witch hazel, and it helps prevent this.  Sometimes if a blemish is "ready" to go, I will also squeeze it, but many times they are best left alone.  They can be treated with high frequency, which is the glass wand "bug zapper" instrument.  HF helps heal blemishes by creating antibacterial ozone and heat in the skin.  Don’t worry, while extractions aren’t exactly pleasant, they are NOT unbearably painful!   You’ll be fine!!

For those of you not requiring extractions, there may be other treatments used, including facial massage.

After extractions I usually apply a mask or a calming treatment.  I have a number of them to use, so I pick one to address the most concerning issues.  This is the only time I leave you alone in the room, while I remove used towels, tidy up a bit, so when you get up it's not a mess.  Also, this is the time I'll gather any home-care products I've recommended for you to purchase.

After the mask is removed I apply various hydration and treatment products and finish with sunscreen.  You're ready to buy a bunch of stuff from me and leave a big tip!!  LOL!!  :)

How much do facials cost?

Pricing can vary so widely, my basic facial around $90.  With deals like Groupon you usually get what you pay for, so beware the $29 facial!  Major cities will many times have higher price, as will spas with many amenities (steam room, showers, fluffy robe and slippers).

How do you know if your facial is safe?  Cleanliness is what you're looking for.  If things don't look clean they probably aren't.  Everything in my peaceful and pretty studio is pristine.  The sheets and towels on the treatment bed must be fresh, and everything should smell clean.  Trust your gut.  Other things I would be watchful for:  if the esthetician leaves the room while the steam and/or exfoliant is on your skin you are not dealing with the best esthetician for you.  They should be there in case something goes wrong with the equipment (which could scald you) or your skin over-reacts to the exfoliant and they need to remove it immediately.

Just a note about the products I recommend and sell:  Yes, I do make a commission on products I sell.  But, that’s not the reason I’m recommending products for you to purchase.  I’m committed to improving your skin!  Let’s say we do a facial once a month.  That’s just 1 day!  Your home-care products are what you use for the other 30 days!  It’s important that you use products that address your specific skin-improvement goals.  Certain treatments, especially deeper exfoliating and anti-aging treatments, require very specific after care to achieve the best possible outcome.  Most drugstore and department store products are perfectly safe, but in order to be safe and acceptable to the masses, they rarely contain the percentages of active ingredients that can improve your skin significantly.  Would you rather use a product where most of the purchase price goes to a fancy advertising campaign, or one where the cost of the product is a result of extensive research and high percentages of costly and effective active ingredients?  That being said, I am not one to judge.  We all have a budget we must stick to.  I hope you will prioritize your skin care accordingly.  I will help you pick the best products to fit your needs AND your budget!  Please let me work with you on this!!

Speaking of your skin-care budget, please remember that PROFESSIONAL skin care products are sold by a professional, licensed esthetician.  NOT a website.  Product diversion is a huge and growing problem in the skin-care industry, and it means that the products you buy from third party websites are not fresh, may have been stored improperly, and may be altered, diluted or counterfeit.  Please visit my Facebook page to read an in-depth report about the risks and problems of product diversion.  PLEASE support my business - a small, women-owned business, by purchasing fresh, authentic, professional products from me.  :)

Other notes:  I do many different types of facials.  Not all include extractions, so if you're going to a big event or having photos, I can smooth and refresh your skin without any irritation.

Again about extractions:  it's normal to have some redness and inflammation after extractions.  This should resolve in about 24 hours, so plan your social life accordingly.

Facials will improve your skin best if done regularly.  I usually recommend every 4-6 weeks.  This allows me to get through the bulk of the congestion in the first 2 treatments, and then we can really get down to working on other issues you may have, and general maintenance.  Occasionally I will recommend every-other-week facials when treating more persistent acne.  But, even if facials are a once or twice a year treat, they can still help improve your skin.

I invite those of you in the Los Angeles area to contact me for an appointment!  It would be my honor and pleasure to treat all of your skin care needs!  Please feel free to contact me at 310.487.3663 or appointments@goddesslynnebodyandskin.com for an appointment.

Gluten-Free Skin

Good Morning!!

I have read a number of articles about how dietary choices can improve skin health, and here is one that I particularly like:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maura-henninger-nd/gluten-and-acne_b_2601648.html?utm_hp_ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false

an excerpt:

In sensitive individuals, gluten acts in two ways. First, it alters the integrity of the gut, creating cracks in the gut lining that allow toxins to recirculate back into the system. Second, because gluten-sensitive people cannot properly digest gluten, these large molecules enter the bloodstream, and the immune system recognizes them as invaders, activating an immune response that increases inflammation, which in turn can result in acne. This kind of immune response also triggers the release of insulin, which results in raised hormone levels, another cause of acne.

I'm not a nutritionist, dietitian or doctor.  However, I often suggest researching the possibility of eliminating grains and sugar to my clients with acne.  This suggestion is often met with some version of "oh, I could NEVER give up_________" (fill in the blank).

I lovingly suggest that if your skin problems are not responding to topical treatment that you at least RESEARCH and TRY a dietary approach for 4-6 weeks.

This, along with professional treatment, can often make the difference you've been looking for!

Endermologie for Cellulite Treatment

I hope you had a beautiful Holiday Season!!  2013 is already shaping up to be an AMAZING year!

Speaking of shaping up, let's talk about bikini season, which is closer than you think!  Now, maybe you don't REALLY wear a bikini, but everyone want's to be in better shape when it's time to shed the winter sweaters and boots.

Have you ever heard of ENDERMOLOGIE?

Endermologie is the FDA-cleared treatment to improve the appearance of cellulite.  You know, our old friend cellulite, the bumpy, orange-peel skin that seems to focus on our thighs and bottoms, but also can appear on tummies and arms.  Grrr, cellulite!!

So many times we think cellulite has something to do with those extra 5 or 10 pounds of holiday indulgence, but the truth is, cellulite is a condition of the SKIN and it's structure.  Within the skin's layers are little cells and connective tissue.  Imagine the buttons on a piece of upholstered furniture - the button is sewn in tight, and the cushion bulges up around it.  THAT'S what the connective strands are doing in the skin - and everything is bulging out around it, causing a little dimple!

Endermologie uses a technique called TISSULAR LIFTING, which helps to make the connective tissue more flexible and pliable, easing the dimples!!!  By increasing the blood circulation to the skin by up to 300%, Endermologie brings healing oxygen to the skin, helping to create a smoother, tighter, brighter appearance.

Now, this isn't an overnight sensation, I recommend 20 sessions, taken over the course of about 10 weeks.  You need to be consistent, at least 1 treatment each week.  You need to be well-hydrated for the treatment to work.  Once your series is complete, I recommend a treatment about once a month, to maintain your results.

BUT, IF YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT IN A LITTLE EFFORT, YOU CAN SEE AMAZING RESULTS!!

Most of my clients have seen at least a 50% improvement in the appearance of their cellulite, and some much more!

Endermologie is also very healthy for your body!  It's an excellent lymphatic drainage massage, it feels great and is both relaxing and invigorating.  Some clients even lose a few inches!!

If you're not in the Los Angeles area, I suggest you search for Endermologie in high-end salons, some dermatologist's offices, and sometimes chiropractic offices.  Medi-spas are also a possibility.  Although I haven't done an extensive search outside of Los Angeles, from what I've seen you can expect to pay anywhere from $80 to $120 for a 35-minute session, with better prices when you buy a series.

I'd be happy to refer you to a salon in the Los Angeles area that does endermologie.  Just drop me a line at info@goddesslynnebodyandskin.com and put endermologie in the subject line.

Thank you for reading!!

For the ladies...let's talk about waxing!

Yes, THAT waxing!!

As a licensed esthetician with over 10 years of experience, I can say that I've probably seen it all and have answers for all your waxing questions.

Let's cover some FAQ's with regard to Brazilian waxing!

Why should I wax, when it's easier and cheaper to just shave?

Waxing isn't for everyone, but it can be!!  Waxing removes hair from the root, so the results last longer and with time can cause the hair to grow back more slowly.  Since there is no blade scraping over your delicate skin, the likelihood of skin irritation is reduced.  There is no stubble, since the hair is removed from the follicle and an entirely NEW hair is growing in it's place.  And, there is no danger of nicking or cutting your most delicate skin.

What exactly IS Brazilian Waxing?

Brazilian is a more extensive bikini wax.  I will be removing ALL the hair in your bikini area, including the entire labia and between the cheeks in back.

What should I do to prepare for my first Brazilian Wax?

First of all, relax!!  I've been doing this for a long time.  No matter how much hair you have, how coarse or curly, and how sensitive you are, I can handle it!!

When you book your first wax, please feel free to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable, I'm here for you.

You should not shave your hair for 2-3 weeks prior to your waxing treatment.  There needs to be enough hair length for the wax to capture the hair.  If the hair is too short you will not get a completely smooth result.  PLEASE, don't come to me having shaved a few days prior and think I can make it happen!!

Don't worry if you showered in the morning and now it's evening.  You're clean!!  If you feel more comfortable, feel free to use the moist wipes provided in the lady's room.

If you're on your menstrual period that's fine, just please use a tampon.

Please be on time for your appointment, allowing extra time for traffic and parking, especially if it's your first time to my location.  If you're late we will need to rush, and I don't want to do that to you!!  Please understand, I've booked ample time for your treatment, and I'm usually fully booked.  I don't think it's fair to make my next client wait if you arrive late.  Likewise, you can count on me to be on time for our appointment!  I won't ask you to wait!!

I'm shy, do I have to take off my panties?

Well, yes.  Since we're waxing the labia and between the cheeks in back, you will receive a better treatment if you undress below the waist.  I will provide you with a towel, which we will use for modesty, but also to facilitate the waxing process.  You're not as exposed as you think!  Please trust me, I've been doing this for a long time!!

Is it safe and sanitary?  I don't want to catch anything!!

I practice a "single dip" method of waxing.  This means, I use a disposable spatula to dip into my wax pot, and I only use it once.  Each time I apply wax I use a new spatula.  There is no cross-contamination this way.  The treatment table is covered with fresh paper, and the towels used are freshly laundered in hot water with detergent and bleach.  Any implements (such as tweezers) are sanitized according to State Board regulations.

goddesslynneBODYandSKIN is the home of The Peaceful Brazilian Bikini Wax!

How much does it hurt?  Should I take something for the pain?

Let's review just what waxing is:  we're removing the hair from the follicle using warm wax and a fabric strip.  It's like pulling off a band-aid, but a little more!!  Yes, there is some discomfort, but it's quick and then it's over and you're hair-free!  Some times (like right before your menstrual period) can be more uncomfortable, so you'll want to schedule accordingly.  Also, the first 2 or 3 appointments (when you've never waxed before) can be more uncomfortable, as we're removing hairs that have never been waxed before.  After a couple of times, the hair comes out more easily.

Some women take an anti-inflammatory before waxing.  I cannot recommend any medication, as I'm not a doctor, but you can always try if it's something you've taken safely in the past.  The feedback I get from clients is that it makes the wax a little easier, and there's less pinkness after the wax.

Speaking of that...

What will my skin look like immediately after the waxing treatment?

Some women experience a bit of pinkness after waxing.  A very few are somewhat red.  As long as the skin is intact, this is not a problem and will subside within a few hours to a day.  Women with very coarse hair will sometimes experience a bit of "pinprick" bleeding.  This is not an injury to the skin, rather, the hair follicle disrupts nearby capillaries, allowing a tiny bit of blood to surface.  This usually only happens the first couple of times that you wax.  As I mentioned above, everything is sanitary, so there is no cause for concern.

How often do I need to wax?

I recommend Brazilian waxing about every 4 weeks.  You need to wait long enough for some re-growth, but not so long that you're starting from scratch every time.  Remember, we can't wax if the hair is too short.  At our 2nd appointment, I will evaluate your growth and advise you on the timing of your subsequent waxing appointments.

What about after care?

For the first 24 hours after waxing, please be very gentle with your skin.  Avoid tight clothing, tanning, saunas/steam rooms and jacuzzi's.  Use a gentle shower gel and keep the area clean and dry.  We will also discuss exfoliation to prevent ingrown hairs.

I take Accutane, can I still wax?

No, waxing is contraindicated for anyone taking Accutane.  You must wait 3 months after completing your prescription before any waxing treatments can be performed.

How much does it cost?

In the Los Angeles area, where I work, Brazilian waxing can range from $25 to $75 and up, depending on the salon.  Currently, I charge $50 for this service.

Do I need to add a gratuity to my bill?

It's customary to add 15-20%, but that's entirely up to you!!  It's a gift, and very much appreciated!!

Can you do a Brazilian Wax for my boyfriend?

I do body waxing for men, including bikini waxing, but not Brazilian waxing.  I will help you find a qualified esthetician if you'd like.

What other treatments do you offer?

I offer face and body waxing, facials and resurfacing treatments and peels.  I will cover these in future blog posts.  Please email me if you have any questions!!

Thank you for reading!!  I work in the West Los Angeles area, and I'd be delighted to be your favorite esthetician!!  Please email me at appointments@goddesslynnebodyandskin.com if you'd like an appointment.  Please put "waxing appointment" in the subject line, and I look forward to seeing you soon!!
